Hello fellow Scullers,
I joined this site a few years back after doing a lot of internet research on sculling. I didn’t get very active with the forum since I’m not much for social media. I did make a connection with Bob Hayden and had the pleasure of meeting him where he was living at the time near the Salton Sea. I was hunting the area with my beat up old hand made scull boat I bought on craigslist a while back, contacted him through the forum and arranged to stop by and chat one evening. He’s a wealth of knowledge alright. I continue sculling each year in Southern California and prefer that to hunting over decoys in the duck blinds. But I’m working full time and have a wife and 3 young boys at home so I only get out a handful of times each season. Besides, the places I can hunt are 3.5 - 4 hours from where I live. My oldest son just got his hunting license at age 10 so now we’re doing some dove and quail hunting and tried out our first duck blind hunt a couple weeks ago. I’d like to get him in my 1.5 man scull with me but logistics are difficult and I’ll have to put together a plan for next season. I can’t tell you my spot but I’ll say that I primarily hunt this river that we have down in So Cal. It requires me to unload my boat up river, drive down stream in my truck and park down river, and then ride back up to my boat on a bike to start my float. I often float 5 or 10 miles and when I do this on my own it takes a lot of effort, but it’s very rewarding. I’ll be able to bring my son along when I can take the family out for the weekend and have my wife drop us off with the truck instead of doing it all on my own. Anyway, just wanted to tell you a little about me before I mention my question. I would like to scull with my sons as they grow, and I will want a better/newer/more solid with flotation/ larger scull boat. I’m interested in making one myself or possibly buying one specific to my needs. I’m really interested in Kevlar too, because what I have imagined is something pretty large and Kevlar would help keep it lightweight for car topping. I’ve read that Mat on here has built Kevlar sculls before and realize that this forum doesn’t get a lot of traffic but maybe it will pick up a little bit. Any advise, comments, or what not is appreciated. Would love to hear from some of you. I’ll see if I can include a few pictures of my recent hunts this season.
