Gentlemen:
I bought a Witham Float and Oar in 2020. I had the recent opportunity to buy a backup scull oar locally on CL. It was made from an old Atlantic City Lifeboat. I have been sculling flat side up since 2020. This oar is bent flat side down. I am planning on steaming it.
My Witham oar is offset but straight, so if I want a bend, I don’t have a good model to copy.
I really don’t know what a good scull-oar shape would be if I were to bend/modify.
This new oar is 9’ / 3’ blade. The blade is tapered to the tip but definitely thicker and stiffer that the Witham (the Witham oar is slim and uniform thickness most of the way up. Flexible blade)
Should I just straighten? Put a bend at the oar/shaft junction? Put a bend in the blade? Put a bend in the lower 1/3 of the shaft? Thin out the blade? Fiberglass or epoxy? Take the metal band off blade tip? (epoxy and fiberglass?)
I would post pics if I knew how.

I would try the oar before altering it.
I wouldn't risk changing it from FSD to FSU as you could weaken it.
More bend = more roll If you get the bend right you don't need to use your wrist as much. I put the bend where the blade meets the handle ....put a string from blade tip to end of the handle and shoot for 3 or so inches to the blade handle intersection, some put a slight bend in the blade also. this will be your best guess as all oars are different
I would NOT fiberglass a one piece oar unless it is cracked or weak ....water WILL get in and rot it. A one piece will last forever if you take care of it
If there is a metal band on the tip it is probably repairing a split remove and epoxy /fiberglass the tip..
The old Navy oars are great you can take a little off the length and thickness until you get the feel you want then dry it good before painting
Your oar is likely spruce but I have seen them in oak and ash all three will have a different feel. weight/ blade length will also factor in on the feel of the oar

Curt! How have you been doing? Miss some of the scullers that showed up for our scullers get togethers. Many have quit sculling or have moved away. It’s just good to see a familiar name come onto the site. I know most of the guys have moved onto another web site. I sure miss the gang. A traditional that my be lost for ever. Good health to you.

Hey Rick, All is well here! Still getting out when I can. Last season was tough with all the wind and rain but still managed to shoot a few. Considering building a new boat this year as my old one seems to get heavier every season.... Thinking higher profile wider and 13 feet maximum so it fits in a short bed pickup. probably use kevlar if I do it. Mike is running a facebook site more posts than here but still not a bunch of activity.. Us scullers dont talk too much Good to here from you.
