I recently hunted out of a Banke's Predator-styled scull and I've been looking at buying one or something like it but have had no luck since boats are few and far between. I've also contacted Bankes to ask about buying one directly from them and they are not currently making those boats due to being short-staffed and having to build their bigger boats.
So, I am planning to build one and I want to build one out of fiberglass or even Kevlar. I've read some of the posts on the forum and wanted advice on building the mold. I was thinking of building it out of foam board and shaping it to a shape similar to the Bankes, Wave, Hayden styles.
I've built a couple of small boats out of wood but never with a mold or fiberglass. I was hoping someone could answer a few questions for me.
-Are there any plans or something I can reference for building one of these style boats? The plans I've seen have been for bigger, wooden style boats.
-Most of the boats I've referenced seem to have a rounded bottom and maybe flattening out towards the front of the boat. Is this the best way to go as far as ease of sculling?
-After I shape the mold, what should I use for "fairing" it? A high quality car body filler?
-After fairing, what should I put on it to keep the resin from sticking to it?
-How many layers of fiberglass or Kevlar is recommended? And also what type?
-I'll probably build the bottom hull mold and a top deck mold. What's the best way to join them? Epoxy? Maybe glass the seam?
I greatly appreciate any help and anything else anybody might could add that I didn't mention.
