Hi Curt How interesting to see some of these Boats. Many are very recognizable, because they were the Humboldt starts from molds with some design changes. The Hulls tell that story and what they did from that point as I have mentioned, We all have there own Ideas. I really enjoyed the look see and took my time looking at each. The picture with a Number of Boats in one pic then the same pic with the same boat and a number of hunters with one hunter looking like he was explaining the oar as the rest were intrigued listening. Wondering if that was a builder or guide with a few boat? lots of questions. This is up my alley as enjoy this more then you know. Great, great Post. Its very hard not to reply back. Many of these boats look like some of the old market boats while some look like east coast boats which were all built big and strong. especially the old market boats.. I have a couple pictures of Humboldt market boats and I will try and find them. Again Great Job Curt. It is easy to tell you enjoy this wonderful sport of sculling.. Also thanks for those previous Pictures of the Cy boat... sculler72

The best picture is of John Haydens son painting a boat. It's literally in his apartments front room on the floor. He's got the oven on heating the place to set the paint as the heater is broken.

Sculler 72, A bunch of these photos were from a get together we had 10+-? years ago. A few of the forum members organized the gathering at a club on Grizzly Island and we got to launch and scull around Honker bay. Fun to see all the different boats that were brought and meet some of the hunters. Lots of knowledge and years on the oar were present that day.
The rest of the photos are from random posts I grabbed off an old forum before it was shut down. I wish I had copied all the posts that went with the pictures but I didn't think to do that.
Anyway eelgrass is right that picture of John Hayden's son painting that boat is priceless and the story that went with it still makes me smile. I hope the sons followed their dad and grandfather into sculling! Oh would love to see some HB market boats if you can find the pictures.

Curt Here is where it all began. (pictures Below) These old scullers started back in the 1910-1920 with the elimination of market hunting and elimination of the shotguns used. In 1918. they were eliminated because of the amount of Ducks killed on a single scull, sculling into flocks of hundreds and possibly more Ducks. I read stories of these Duck hunters killing as many as 100 ducks in a single scull.. Kind of unbelievable to say the least. These shot guns/ Punt Guns were used from the West Coast to the East Coast and probably every where in between. I used to know much more then I do now learning from a few of those old scullers and market hunters of that era a long, long time ago Until I was fortunate to find this site. most all that i remember is gone and now reminiscing back has brought some back and well appreciated from those whom love this great art of sculling. Most sculling issues were a thing of the past until I met this site and the few that still find sculling for ducks and geese a great way to hunt. We are a loner bunch sorta speak in our way of hunting and with me that has grown into even my Buck and Elk Hunting. As time passes us by we forget a lot about things accept the most important. Family First then Sculling and Bucks. As mentioned very fortunate to have started this gig when I was very young and hanging around the ramps watching these old guys as they came in from a day of sculling made me want it more then you can imagine. Learning and believe me that was the hardest part of this whole thing, along listening, and really paying attention on every little bit I could get from one of these old guys who seemed to know every thing to know about sculling. It took a while for them to see that I really wanted to learn as every chance I could find a way to get that boat in the water I was there. A year later when I found a way to get my first pick up It became an obsession and was there as many time that I could. We could only scull Wednesdays Saturdays and Sundays along with Holidays on the Bay which for me was a good thing or I might not of went to school. LOL Sculling kept me and my Buddies out of trouble. My wife then and still to this day has always knew it was a love that she could not stop me from. That is a very huge plus having a Lady behind you as many can contest to. Curt You asked for a couple pictures of these old scullers way back and the boats that started it all. I was unable to locate a few of the pictures i had came across years ago but found what i could show how it all got started. You seem very interested and was very willing to help you on your way to a couple Eastern CA haunts that I grew to and become exceptional places to scull.
