First wishing a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year In 2021 to all my Fellow Scullers and Duck and Goose Hunters.
I wrote a few words in the Forum Back in the earlier part of this Year.
I also asked a few questions pertaining to Brant hunting Humboldt Bay CA. With not one reply back on my questions? Asking how the season went for hunters, Hunting Brant in 2019 with no Reply's was a little disturbing.
But! after sitting back and realizing that most Brant hunters not only do not want to indulge in, and about Humboldt Bay Brant Hunting along with Sculling was to keep it all a secret. I think and not realizing these Birds are a well sought after Bird, Not only for the great hunts they provide but the table fare is out of this world. My opinion only.
So with that as I explained earlier this year that the few things I missed about Humboldt Bay was the Brant Hunting. Back after I left Humboldt In the early 70's the Brant hunting was enormously popular for young and old. The old were many as the old Blinds built and maintained by them were many. Along with the Beach south spit blinds were also stilt Blinds covering the bay.
In today's world those Blinds are all but gone both the spit blinds and are the number of stilt blinds. Prior to leaving humboldt the destruction of the Blinds slowly but surely were eliminated by fires set by individuals that as I understand have never been brought to justice for what ever reason.
The seasons back then were long and very, very fruitful for those whom hunted the Black Brant of the Pacific North West. In today's world those season have been cut back dramatically due supposedly because of the low numbers starting back in the late 60 and now recovered back to great numbers. The seasons have went from mid November thru to mid February closing somewhere around the 18th of that month to now starting in Mid November to the Middle of December, making that hunt in Humboldt bay nothing as it once was back in the 50's, 60's, and early 70's not even any where close.
I mentioned that in the season of 2020 i was going back a couple times that season and not only hunt Brant but also to reminisce about the old days and great time I had hunting those elusive Brant with Family members a friends I had grown up with. The largest thing was my Grand Father passing on that Beach while hunting and putting out his decoys on the south spit back in 69 as I happen to be on the Beach the Day it all came down. That Man was my mentor through out my young years of the learning and teaching growing up.
I was able to hunt a couple times this fall during the Brant season in complete amazement and how one of the best bays on the Pacific North west went from a hunters paradise to where there were 9 spots too hunt from what used to have 40 Blinds and at least a dozen stilt blinds. How Sad is that and then they wonder why there is so much tension among the hunting pressure when and if the Brant flow into the bay which are low numbers far and few the days allowed to hunt. The couple times I was there the first three days we never seen a single Brant, then playing the tides I wanted to hunt my second go around there were a few Brant one of the 4 days I was there and did get a shot or two and very fortunate. So I heard from many that was a normal Brant season with few birds entering the Bay and when a few came it was stormy days if lucky enough to get the storms needed out of the south.
Talking to many whom have a hand in the way the system is set up now was determined supposedly by a huge number of Homeless individuals entering the spit and making the homes there creating many Huge issues that they were finally eliminated from the beach and Gates were put up to keep all out, accept the times designated on opening at 4:am and closing at 6:oopm.
Again a huge question on my mind: First whom have to suffer because of a bunch of Homeless individuals whom could care less about rules and regulations? second the environmentalist whom of coarse have there say about either a Bird or the vegetation that is being destroyed by the hunting community. Third what are the tax payers word in all this? Doesn't seem like much as the BLM and the Fish and Wildlife have went together and help maintain the beach as it is today. SAD! very sad to see what once was to where the spit is today. They indicated there has been shootings, drug bust and everything in between and again whom suffers the People and sportsman whom have used that facility for decades with never those issues of any kind. To me if it is that hard to control there are other issues that some one whom just don't give a _HIT, But boy they love those Taxes and Revenue that they receive from the Sportsman each and every year. Giving nothing back but cut seasons and the game of very few spots to hunt, How Sad Is That?
With all that Too me it mattered not to fire a shot or kill a Brant, Was able to meet up with some local folks whom I have not seen in some 50+ years But! the idea of what is and what used to be. I'm thinking we live in a world to where its all about the dollar and the hell with the sportsman whom with there revenue keep things rolling.
There is no absolutely no good reason for that Brant season to have more days then what they give the Hunter, I don't care what there excuses are its un-necessary that the Mexicans can kill huge numbers along with people in the tundra can steel the eggs each and every year not only from Brant But also Ducks and Geese. Its not the sportsman whom are eliminating the fish and wildlife its all the BS around us and regulations that only matter when the dollar is involved. Sorry for putting it out there but I am a concerned sportsman of what this world in the hunting and fishing has become and where it is going to go if we do not stick together, But strive to make it better.. You do have a viable opinion and its not up to someone else its up to us all.
Thanks for listening Merry Xmas Sculler72
