Hi again Steve
I looked at you new paint job today.
Your absolutely right on the shine we get on our boats when you splash water over the deck of your Boat..
All my years of painting my boats whether it be on a muddy reservoir, bay it matters not. If your hunting a deep lake and the water is pristine and clear or after a huge storm and the water turns brown with coloration from all the run off.
When younger I always played with matching colors to the color of the water. Not! If you go out on any body of water and look across the water what do you see? I see a very very light grey on open water and close to any mountain, hill covered with trees you get a darker back drop, so the grey shows up more if your sculling out from that back drop.
When we spoke the other day we mentioned getting everything right for the scull and what I have found is I always set up trying to get it right sculling from the open water back into the birds especially into a back drop which I sure those lakes and reservoirs in MT have a lot of tree'd high mountains which if you look gets pretty dark in those shadows of that back drop. At the same time looking back out from those back drops to open water, it will look like a very light, light grey almost or maybe even as light as grey gel coat.
So i played with this for yrs upon years always playing with colors finding out that light grey with some darker greys swirled in kinda like a light camo pattern will make some huge differences on a weary bunch of birds.
Now the Biggy is as you have done add a semi gloss, gloss, or even as you have done a clear coat added. I use a semi gloss and have found that when the sun hit it and sculling into the dark area instead of out of it does wonders as the birds are pretty much seeing the everyday grey sheen that that water look has.
As you know and understand, ok! wind lol another factor. so how can I get the conditions right playing the back drop, open water scull if the wind is not in my favor?
I will always go out of my way to get the wind right and seems to play a much better percentage on what to do. If you have both in your favor you will have it all and more then not you will kill what ever scull is on. As we chatted it is so important to have everything right or as right as you can make it. I have seen guys see birds come in especially Honkers and just lay down and start there scull not paying attention about anything and never getting 70-80 yrs from those birds and yea there are exceptions so they'll try again and not fire a shot.
Its only my opinion of coarse Buy I think you will see what a valuable lesson you learned and the difference it will make.
The biggest thing I believe you did right on is is spraying that clear over what you painted.
One more thing I have found and again If you get a foggy day is too use a news paper on the bow and sprinkle a little water here and there and see what that will do for you. The old boy way back that is Mr Bill nellist gave me that tip in Humboldt bay. You have been there so you know coming on birds with a dark boat in that light grey hazy fog is crazy getting on those birds.
These things are only my idea of works very well for me and If I can share them with anyone that it might help or even if they say hell that's crazy, that's fine too. All I can say just give it a try.
Well again thanks for listening or reading as I enjoy so much reading what each one on here has to write about and I can throw my 2 cents in and walk away happy.. Thanks again Steve.
